Is it fall y’all?

Is it fall y’all?

Yes, there are football games being played which is a true sign it is fall.  The trees are changing colors, the migration of various species is beginning, we are heading toward Halloween and Thanksgiving; all a part of the fall activities, but…

Seasons are…well, seasonal.  We have Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.  In the south it has been said, “If you don’t like the weather, wait a few minutes and it will change.”

Several years ago, I went out to Washington State, to a small suburb of Olympia to do some mission work with a Korean Mission Church.  In Lacey, Washington, as we were driving from the hotel to the church one afternoon I experienced all seasons rolled into one.  It started out with a very sunny, cloudless sky.  Then the rain slowly fell with a soft patter on the top of the rental van.  Suddenly lightening flashed, thunder rolled, and the rain intensified.  Then the real wonder took place.  It started to hail, then snow.

When we arrived at the church the parking lot and the yard of the church was covered in a fine dusting of the whitest snow, with quarter sized hail mingled within.  It was an amazing day for me and I still recall the wonder in my eyes of such an event, but the jubilation in the eyes of those Korean children who were running and playing in the snow.

Maybe I best just realize that it is October; feels like August; but all is well, because my Lord is in charge and He is with me.

From time to time, I will find myself humming the tune and the words to a song written in 1960 by Barbara Fowler Gaultney.

“In the lightening flash across the sky His mighty power I see, And I know if He can reign on high, His light can shine on me.”

“When the thunder shakes the mighty hills and trembles every tree, Then I know a God so great and strong can surely harbor me.”

“When refreshing showers cool the earth and sweep across the see, Then His rainbow shines within my heart, His nearness comforts me.”

“I’ve seen it in the lightening, heard it in the thunder, and felt it in the rain; My Lord is near me all the time, My Lord is near me all the time.”

That is the truth.  When hurricanes churn and cause panic; black clouds gather; troubled forecast come; and even when it is 74 degrees and feels like 92 degrees, God is still in control.  He is still near and still holding onto even me.

“Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go up to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. If I live at the eastern horizon ⌊or⌋ settle at the western limits, even there Your hand will lead me; Your right hand will hold on to me. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light around me will be night”— even the darkness is not dark to You. The night shines like the day; darkness and light are alike to You.” (Psalm 139:7-12 HCSB)

These words of David should resonate in our hearts today.  We have comfort, no matter what or where, God is near us.

He will never leave us or forsake us.

“Dear Father, bring on the cooler weather. Remind us there is a great God who is in charge and has everything in control.  Just as You are in charge of the seasons, You are in charge of our lives, love is and allow us to lean on You in all things.  May God bless us and keep us, in His Name we pray, Amen.”
